Legal, Medical, and Safety Implications of Vaping Ethanol

Advisor: Michelle Peace, Ph.D., Department of Forensic Science

E-liquids used in e-cigarettes/vaping devices can contain ethanol (alcohol) in concentrations greater than 20%, though ethanol is typically not labeled as an ingredient. There is minimal literature describing how vaping ethanol may impact impairment. Two human clinical studies have been designed to evaluate the impacts of vaping ethanol on roadside impairment investigations performed by law enforcement officers, subjective perceived impairment,  ethanol biomarker concentrations, and ethanol pharmacokinetics. This research should provide law enforcement, policy makers, and medical professionals with information needed to update policies and practices regarding ethanol impairment and biomarker testing for individuals who vape.
