Tidal freshwater wetland carbon cycling
Advisor: Christopher Gough, Ph.D., Department of Biology
My area of research is focused on freshwater tidal wetland carbon cycling, and more specifically, the variation in temporal and spatial biophysical drivers of carbon dioxide and methane fluxes within restored Kimages Creek Marsh (US-RRC). Tidal freshwater wetlands are relatively understudied systems, highlighting the critical need to better understand their role in greenhouse gas emissions. This is especially important because these systems are often sources of methane emissions as opposed to their saline counterparts. Moreover, this research is even more pressing considering the implications of our ever-evolving global climate. My work also engages multiple disciplines including remote sensing, ecology, and modeling to understand whole ecosystem behavior in this restored wetland.
